You Are What You Eat? Um.. Yep!

I firmly believe the phrase “you are what you eat” was created in an effort to shame or, in some perverse way, motivate those who make poor dietary choices to make better ones. So I’d like to take the opportunity to reframe this idea with cold hard facts.

The truth of the matter is that our bodies use the food we eat to regenerate organs, bones and other tissues. This regeneration isn’t a slow, drawn out process either. Check out these facts on how quickly the cells in various parts of our bodies turn over …

  • Stomach: 2-4 days
  • Taste Buds: 10 days
  • Skin: Every 2-4 weeks
  • Lungs: 2-3 weeks
  • Intestines: 20 days
  • Liver: 6 weeks
  • Trachea: 1-2 months
  • Brain: Every 2 months
  • Skeletal System: 10% each year

Don’t forget that it’s not just the food we eat that fuels the rapid turn over of cells in our bodies. Water makes up 90% of the human body. So if you are drinking an adequate amount of H2O and eating nutrient dense foods, just think of how amazing you’ll feel the next time you hear “You are what you eat.”
